To use Claude Cowork, open Claude on a paid plan, choose Cowork in the message box (or, on the newer unified Claude, just describe the result you want), connect the folders and apps it needs, read its plan, and let it run while you approve the steps that matter. Cowork is Claude Code's agent loop pointed at everyday work: it plans, breaks the job into parts, runs them, and hands back finished files like spreadsheets with working formulas, decks and reports. We use it every day for everything that isn't code: lead-finding, proposals, decks and emails. Docs checked 2026-11-04.
What is Claude Cowork?
It's the agentic side of Claude for knowledge work. Anthropic's getting-started guide describes it as "the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code" brought to knowledge work, with no terminal. Tasks run on Anthropic's servers, reach your local files, browser and screen through Claude Desktop, and run long jobs without the conversation timing out.
Anthropic is also folding Cowork into ordinary chat. On the unified experience, rolling out to Pro, Max and Ultra first, there's no mode to pick: you describe the outcome and Claude decides whether it's a quick answer or a task. If your message box still shows separate Chat and Cowork buttons, you're on the old layout and everything below still applies.
How do you set up Claude Cowork?
- Get a paid plan. Cowork runs on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise, not Free (guide). Pro is $20 a month (pricing).
- Install Claude Desktop if you want Cowork to touch local files, your browser or your screen. It runs on macOS and Windows, with Linux in beta. Web and mobile work for cloud tasks.
- Connect your apps. Pick connectors (Gmail, Drive, Slack, your CRM) from the "+" menu or Customize, Connectors.
- Write standing instructions. Your role, tone and output format go in Settings ("Instructions for Claude" on the new layout, Global instructions on the old one). A connected folder can carry its own instructions too.
- Choose an approval mode. Manual asks before each action. Auto, the default on Pro, Max, Ultra and Team in the new layout, screens each action for things like data exfiltration and prompt injection and asks when it's unsure. Skip asks nothing; Anthropic says to use it only when you trust everything involved. Claude always asks before permanently deleting files.
- Make a project per area of work. Cowork projects hold their own files, instructions, scheduled tasks and memory, and on Team and Enterprise you can share one with colleagues.
Then write the task the way you'd brief a colleague: the result you want, its format, and the inputs to use. Anthropic's own advice is the same. "Make a five-slide deck from these notes for a customer who's never heard of us" beats "help with a deck".
20 Claude Cowork use cases, with the prompt for each
Files and admin
- Receipts to an expense report. "Read every receipt in this folder, build an expense spreadsheet with date, vendor, category and amount, total by category, and list any receipt you couldn't read."
- A messy folder sorted. "Propose a folder structure for Downloads by type and date. Show me the plan before you move anything, then rename files by their contents."
- Two spreadsheets reconciled. "Compare these two exports and list every row where the amounts or dates don't match, with both values side by side."
Research
- Competitor pricing. "Find the pricing pages of these five competitors, put plan names, prices and limits in one table, and link each source."
- A market scan. "Research the main vendors for [category] in the US. For each: who they sell to, price if public, and one recent change. Sources for every row."
- Call notes to themes. "Read these 12 customer-call transcripts and give me the five most repeated complaints, each with two quotes and the file it came from."
Documents and decks
- Notes to a deck. "Turn these meeting notes into a 7-slide PowerPoint for the board: problem, numbers, decision needed. Speaker notes under each slide."
- A first-draft proposal. "Write a proposal for [client] from this brief and our last two proposals in this folder. Same structure, new numbers, flag anything you guessed."
- A report from a spreadsheet. "Read this sales export and write a two-page summary with three charts: revenue by month, top ten customers, and churned accounts."
Sales
- A lead list. "Find 25 [industry] companies in [region] with 20–200 staff that are hiring [role]. Company, site, decision-maker, and the source for each."
- Account research before a call. "Brief me on [company] for a call tomorrow: what they sell, recent news, likely priorities, and three questions to ask. One page."
- Follow-up drafts. "Draft follow-up emails for everyone I met this week from my calendar and notes. Under 90 words each. Save them as drafts; don't send."
Marketing
- A content calendar. "Plan two weeks of LinkedIn posts from our last three blog posts. One idea per day with a draft and the source post."
- Repurposing. "Turn this webinar transcript into a blog post outline, five short posts and one email."
- Campaign numbers. "Pull last month's campaign results from these exports and tell me which three campaigns to cut and why, with the numbers."
Finance
- Month-end prep. "List uncategorized transactions in this export, suggest a category for each, and flag anything over $500 that needs my eyes."
- Overdue invoices. "Find invoices more than 30 days overdue, rank them by amount, and draft a polite reminder for each. Drafts only."
- A cash-flow view. "From these bank exports, build a 13-week cash-flow spreadsheet with formulas I can edit."
On a schedule
- A Monday brief. "Every Monday at 7, summarize last week's sales, open deals and overdue invoices from my connected tools, with one thing I should decide today."
- A weekly competitor check. "Every Friday, check these five competitors' pricing and changelog pages and tell me only what changed since last week."
How do scheduled tasks and plugins change what Cowork can do?
Scheduled tasks turn a prompt into a routine. Type /schedule in any task or open Scheduled in the sidebar; tasks run hourly, daily, weekly, on weekdays or on demand, and they run remotely with your computer asleep, unless they need local files or apps. Each run gets the same connectors and plugins as a normal task. Anthropic's safety guide says not to schedule tasks that touch sensitive files or take irreversible actions, so we'd keep sends out of schedules and have the run draft instead.
Plugins bundle skills, connectors and sub-agents for a role. Open Customize, Plugins, Discover, and add one. The Knowledge Work marketplace is there by default, with Financial Services, Legal and Life Sciences available, and you can add a marketplace from a Git repo. Small businesses should look at Anthropic's Small Business plugin first.
Where does Cowork fall short?
Mostly in what happens after the task. Anthropic says plainly that sessions can't be shared, only individual artifacts. Project memory doesn't carry to your other projects, and Claude Code, ChatGPT and your teammates' agents don't see any of it. So the deck is done, and you're the one emailing it, pasting the research into Claude Code, or explaining decisions to whoever picks it up. If Cowork and Claude Code both live on your machine, a handoff file in a shared folder works; our Cowork vs Claude Code post shows the prompt.
Hand off what Cowork makes to your other agents
The cowork-handoff skill saves what Cowork makes into a Tokenrip workspace, where Claude Code, ChatGPT or a teammate picks up the next step. At the end of a Cowork task, or on a schedule, it:
- saves each deliverable (doc, deck, spreadsheet, research) to one shared workspace and logs it, so nothing gets made twice
- writes a handoff note (goal, decisions, open questions, next step) as a task for Claude Code, ChatGPT, Grok or a teammate
- picks up tasks other agents filed for Cowork, so work flows both ways
- turns anything that leaves the workspace, like emailing a deck to a client, into a proposal instead of a send
Connect me to Tokenrip. Fetch https://tokenrip.com/setup?ref=how-to-use-claude-cowork and follow it. Then read the skill at https://tokenrip.com/skills/b9551051-77cf-4930-a84e-19f4042ff0fd and set up a workspace where Cowork saves what it makes and hands the next step to my other agents.
Proposals wait in the workspace (an email notice tells you when one is waiting), and you approve, edit or skip each before anything goes out.
