Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for knowledge work: you describe an outcome, and Claude plans the steps, works across the files and apps you connect, and hands back a finished document, spreadsheet, deck or report. Cowork comes with every paid Claude plan, from Pro at $20 a month to Ultra at $200, plus Team and Enterprise. Cowork isn't on the Free plan.
Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic has been merging Cowork and chat "into one Claude", so on Pro, Max and Ultra there's no separate Cowork tab any more: you ask in any conversation and Claude brings in Cowork when the task needs files or tools. Team (in beta) and Enterprise get the same thing where it's been turned on. Docs checked 2026-11-06.
How much does Claude Cowork cost?
Claude Cowork has no price of its own: it costs what your paid Claude plan costs, and plans differ in how much Cowork work you get before a limit.
| Plan | Price (US, before tax) | Cowork access | Limits notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No | Paid plans only |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) | Yes: desktop, web, mobile | Baseline (1x); Cowork "consumes limits faster than Chat" |
| Max | $100/month | Yes | 5x Pro every 5 hours and every week |
| Ultra | $200/month | Yes | 10x Pro every week, no 5-hour limit for verified accounts |
| Team, Standard seat | $20/seat/month annually, $25 monthly; 2 to 150 people | Yes; web and mobile in beta | More usage than Pro |
| Team, Premium seat | $100/seat/month annually, $125 monthly | Yes | 5x a Standard seat |
| Enterprise | $20/seat/month billed annually, plus usage at API rates; 20-seat minimum | Desktop by default; web and mobile once an owner enables them | Admins set user and org spend limits |

Our take: start on Pro if you want to try Cowork on a few jobs a week. Move to Max once you hit Pro's limit more than once a week, because Cowork tasks use far more than chat. Ultra is for people who hand Claude work all day and keep running into the 5-hour window. Pick Team as soon as a second person needs Cowork and somebody has to decide what it can touch.
Can you use Claude Cowork for free?
No. Anthropic says "Cowork is available to paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise) only" (help). The Free plan still lets you chat, connect apps, create artifacts and "search the web, create files, and run code" (pricing), but not hand off or schedule tasks. Anthropic says "Team and Free plans will follow soon" for the merged Claude, but not what Free users will be able to hand off (announcement).
What are Claude Cowork's usage limits?
Claude Cowork draws from the same usage pool as everything else on your plan, and it drains that pool faster than chat. Anthropic's help center says multi-step tasks use more of your usage than a quick question, and "each step Claude takes uses tokens" (help). Most accounts have a limit on a rolling five-hour window plus a weekly limit on paid plans, and there's no fixed message count (pricing). When you hit a limit you can wait for the reset, move up a plan, or turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates. To stretch it, group related work into one task and start a new conversation for unrelated work.
Is Claude worth $100 a month for Cowork?
In our opinion, yes, if Cowork does part of your job every day: at 5x Pro's usage you stop rationing tasks. Max also adds Fable "up to half your weekly limit", $100 a month in API credits for the Claude Platform and priority access at busy times (pricing). If you use Cowork a few times a week, Pro is enough, and usage credits cover the odd heavy day.
Where does Claude Cowork run?
Claude Cowork runs in the cloud on Anthropic's servers, and you can start or steer a task from Claude Desktop, claude.ai, the iOS and Android apps or the Claude in Chrome side panel (help). Claude Desktop runs on macOS and Windows, with Linux in beta. On October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro, Max and Ultra moved to the cloud for good, so a task keeps going after you close your laptop.
The desktop app still matters. Local files, local connectors, plugins with local MCP servers, browser use and computer use all reach your machine through Claude Desktop, so the app has to be open while a task needs them.
What do people use Claude Cowork for?
Anthropic's examples include a weekly marketing readout built every Monday and a first-pass review of a folder of contracts (Cowork). We use Cowork every day for everything that isn't code: finding leads, proposals, decks and emails. Twenty use cases with prompts you can copy are in how to use Claude Cowork, and if you're choosing between the two agents, Claude Cowork vs Claude Code covers the split.
What are Claude Cowork plugins, and which are the best?
A Claude Cowork plugin bundles skills, connectors and sub-agents into one install, so Claude starts as a specialist for a role instead of a generalist you configure piece by piece. Plugins are on all paid plans. To add one, open Customize in the left sidebar, go to the Discover tab, pick a plugin and click Add (help). A plugin you add is saved to your account, so it also works in chat and in Claude Code.
You can also upload your own plugin file or add marketplaces, such as Anthropic's Financial Services or Legal ones or a GitHub repository. Plugins can include local MCP servers that run with the same permissions as any program on your computer, so only install ones from sources you trust.
As for the best Claude Cowork plugins: Anthropic open-sourced 11 at launch, built and used by its own team: Productivity, Enterprise search, Plugin Create/Customize, Sales, Finance, Data, Legal, Marketing, Customer support, Product management and Biology research (Anthropic). Our suggestion: install the one for your job, then click Customize on it so Claude adapts it to how you work. If you've already written your own skills, Claude skills explains how they fit in.
How do Claude Cowork scheduled tasks work?
Claude Cowork scheduled tasks let you describe a job once and have Claude run it on a cadence, each run as its own Cowork session, in the cloud, even when your computer is asleep (help). They're on all paid plans. Type /schedule in any task or click Scheduled in the sidebar; in the merged Claude, you just ask for it in a conversation and confirm. Cadences are hourly, daily, weekly, weekdays or manual, and a scheduled task can use your connectors, skills and plugins. Two catches: a task that needs local files or apps only runs locally, and scheduled tasks can't use accounts linked in Personal Finance.
What can't Claude Cowork do?
- Share a session. Sessions can't be shared, though you can share individual artifacts made during one (help).
- Reach your computer on its own. Local files, local plugins, the browser and computer use need Claude Desktop open on that machine.
- Stay immune to prompt injection. Anthropic says "the risk of prompt injection attacks is non-zero" (help). "Automatically approve" is the default on Pro, Max, Ultra and Team, so for money, messages sent as you or important files, Anthropic recommends staying close or switching to "Manually approve".
- Keep web tools inside your network rules. Network egress settings don't apply to web fetch, web search or MCPs, including Claude in Chrome.
What admin controls do Team and Enterprise plans get for Cowork?
Claude Cowork is on by default for Team and Enterprise, and an owner can turn it off for the whole organization in Organization settings > Cowork (help). Running Cowork in the cloud is a separate toggle, on by default on Team and off by default on Enterprise. Owners also decide whether members can use "Automatically approve" mode, whether write-capable connector tools can be "Always allow" (off by default), whether the built-in browser is on, and which plugins are installed by default, available, required or hidden. Cowork events can stream to a SIEM through OpenTelemetry, and the Compliance API captures Cowork sessions.
Enterprise adds custom roles to give Cowork to specific groups, user and org spend limits, SCIM and audit logs. In HIPAA-enabled organizations Cowork is off by default. For what the Team plan costs and includes beyond Cowork, see the Claude Team plan.
Hand what Cowork makes to your team and your other agents
Cowork finishes the deck, but the session can't be shared, so the next person or agent starts from a forwarded file and no idea what was decided. Tokenrip is a shared workspace your agents and teammates work from, so what Cowork makes lands where Claude Code, ChatGPT or a colleague picks it up.
- Every deck, report and draft Cowork finishes is saved in one workspace with a note on the goal, the decisions and the next step.
- The next step becomes a task that Claude Code, ChatGPT or a teammate claims, without anyone pasting context.
- Work other agents file for Cowork waits in the same place, and a scheduled Cowork run picks it up.

Paste that into Claude, ChatGPT or any agent you use. The Free plan is $0 with no credit card: unlimited workspaces and agents and 2,500 agent actions a month.
Anything that would leave the workspace, like emailing a deck to a client, waits as a proposal until you approve, edit or skip it.
